Default Wow

I like how the city of LA is half a billion in debt and they can still scrounge up money to pay for a memorial service.

People wonder why the economy is shit, here is your answer.

I don't care who it is. If a city is that far in debt and our economy is shit we can't afford to be spending money uselessly like this. The Jackson family should pay for everything or not have a memorial service this big.

MMS Dome is right.

The city paying for this service is outright silly. They do not pay for everyone elses' services. Joe Blow down the street can't get his brother's services paid for by the city and HE lost a son, isn't that enough?

But oh, this is the king of pop! Who cares. It's not something that they city should be footing the bill for. Those who want the services should have taken up a collection, then paid for it with those proceeds. I'm sure with his popularity the charities could raise the funds required.

Cities that are in debt and governments that have given out I.O.U.'s should not be frivolously spending funds they do not have.

California can go sink into the ocean...

not everyone is michael jackson. and did you not know he's donated so much more to countless charitys? so much that he holds the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing world record? i dont think that compared to a memorial is asking for much.

Key word in this quote is donated. He donated to charities. By giving a donation it was his choice and he doesn't need anything in return. Lets say I am living in LA and since he donated to charities that makes me responsible to pay for his memorial service that I can't even go to and enjoy? It makes no sense. I don't care what he has done the fact remains that this is a waste of money.

O and when I die will the city I live in pay for my memorial service? I mean I have donated some money to charity and done some community service out of the good of my own heart so the taxpayers hard earned money will go to my memorial service when I die?

The whole Michael Jackson stuff has just gone way too far. Sure, a little "RIP", but honestly, people need to get over this stuff, say "RIP" if they respected them, and get on with it. People are dying all of the time. If anything you're the heartless one, God, putting an individuals' life well high over the people dying in much worse conditions as you posted.

So where is Billy Mays, Farrah Fawcet, Ed McMahon, Steve McNair etc funerals? Their families are taking care of them. Yes Michael Jackson was bigger than them but to spend a ton of money on a memorial to him is too much. Yes he changed the world and even influenced many young children (no offense intended) but to give him a huge memorial service while that far in debt is a bit over the top.

I understand the gripe its just he was a public/global superstar and it would have been mass chaos. The city really has no choice but to go in the red for it.

False, the city has a choice. They are already in the red and by decided to give this guy a memorial at this magnitude they have put themselves even further in debt.

How much Jackson donated has no bearing whatsoever on a city footing the bill for memorial services.

By the very definition of a charitable donation it was given with no expectations of a return at a later date.
